My First Run

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Hi, friends!

Well, after the news that I don’t have a stress fracture, or really anything structural wrong with my foot, I got to run yesterday. I’m doing what I think is a ridiculous amount of stretching for my calves (per the physical therapist) so I wasn’t sure how they would feel about running. They’ve been iffy a few times just biking. They really didn’t bother me while I was running though.

My foot didn’t bother me a lot while I was running either. I can’t say there was no pain, at least not without lying. There was a little pain. It was never a sharp pain like when I first got hurt though.

I set out with the goal of 3 miles, and I finished all three of them. I walked for about a minute out of every five. Overall, my pace was 12:28/mile. It felt super slow, but it also felt good just to be there. (You now, once I got over being terrified I was going to hurt a lot and have to figure out how to hop home. :-) )

After the run, I got the rest of my calorie burn for the day on the bike. I rode about 5 miles. My legs were definitely tired at the end of it. Tom let me ride my bike downtown and met me for dinner again Monday evening so I rode 15.55 miles Monday then ran and biked yesterday. My legs are feeling super done right now.

Today’s workout was 30 minutes on the bike indoors (because it’s snowing AGAIN) and 24 minutes of stretching and ab work. I didn’t push anything hard. My calorie burn wasn’t near what I want on a weekday, but I’ll just watch my food a little closer to make up for it. It’s all good.

When’s my next run? Hmm. I’m not sure yet. If my legs feel better, I think there could be another 3 miles tomorrow. I really want to figure out just how many miles I can handle though so I might just wait until the weekend and try a longer run. I have a half marathon in 6 weeks that I’m SERIOUSLY hoping I can finish! :-)

Seriously Frustrated

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Hi, friends!

Well, after nearly 3 months of treating my foot like it had a stress fracture and barely healing, Monday’s MRI showed there’s no stress fracture. So what’s wrong with my foot? Nothing. Seriously. The MRI showed some swelling. Granted, an MRI 3 months ago probably would have shown something because it hurt WAY more then than it does now, but seriously, I’m so far beyond frustrated at this point that I could just scream.

Instead of screaming, I just keep crying a lot. Poor Tom.

Everyone keeps saying this is good news. I just can’t wrap my brain around this as good news. I’ve been laying around doing NOTHING for 3 months. I could have been running and getting ready for the half marathon I’m signed up for on May 7. Now I have 6 weeks to prepare. Can I even do that?

I’m going to try. I’ve been riding my bicycle 6 days a week at least so I’m not worried about my legs or my lungs. My only concern will be my foot. My first run will be today or tomorrow, and we’ll just see how that goes. I’ll report back later in the week with news.

Grr.

17 Miles For My Spirit

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Hi, friends!

The man I’m going to marry is perfect for me, and yesterday, he proved it once again.

I set out after work for a bike ride. I didn’t decide how far I was going or even where really. I just got on my bike and headed south on the Monon Trail. I just had to get out. He was still at work and then had a doctor appointment so I knew I’d have some time before I heard from him.

About 50 minutes into riding, still heading south, I got a text asking if I wanted dinner. My answer? “Yes.” I definitely wanted dinner. Then he asked if I wanted Noodles. “No.” Then he asked if I wanted salad. “No. Call.” (Seriously, the quoted answers are my texts. It’s hard to text and ride!)

So he called, and I explained I was at 54th St on the Monon. (We live around 131st St.) He offered to meet me downtown and drive me home. I was about 8.5 miles from home at that point and had kind of decided I’d turn around at 10 miles and get in 20 for the evening, but when he suggested downtown? I was all in. I only ended up riding around 17 miles, but the ride from home to downtown is so great. I’ve only done it one other time, and that was last summer. It’s not something you can do in the evening after work if you have to ride back home because it takes too long and gets dark way too soon.

That ride was exactly what I needed to lift my spirits yesterday though. Sitting around all day and staying off my foot except for when I ride is hard for me. I’ve done dishes a few times and helped with the laundry a little, but mostly, I just sit. I hate it. It’s depressing. Getting to ride those 17 miles and riding by Conseco Fieldhouse, Lucas Oil Stadium, Victory Field, the new Marriott and the Artsgarden was totally what my little spirit needed. (The new Marriott is GORGEOUS! I can’t wait to stay there mini marathon weekend!)

I am so thankful for this man I’m about to marry. He really is perfect for me. I know he doesn’t get it, but it’s true. :-)
