Happy 4th!

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Hi, friends!

A very happy, belated 4th of July to you!

I don’t know about you, but our weekend was FULL! We started Friday evening with babysitting. I can’t even describe how wonderful it is to watch our grandbaby. She is just the cutest little creature! It’s amazing how easily you forget how much work it is!! She did great this weekend though. We actually slept five whole hours in a row!!

And woke up super happy!

We went to the Carmel Farmer’s Market Saturday morning and picked up steaks and vegetables (which were DELICIOUS Sunday night for dinner). Tom was good enough to go solo babysitting for a little while so I could run 6 miles. Then my dad, step-mom, aunt and brother came up around noon to visit. We had a really nice lunch and walked around downtown Carmel for a while. Claire tried super hard to suck her thumb.

She’s almost got it!

It was difficult, but we gave her back to her mommie about 5:30 Saturday evening. We got a quick bite to eat and went to see Transformers 3. OMGOSH! I LOVED IT!!! I know it makes a big difference that we watched a lot of the filming, but it was so cool! I can’t believe how real they made all that debris we saw lying around Chicago look. It was completely awesome.

Sunday we hopped on our bikes and rode to downtown Indy. It was 16.68 miles to get there. We had lunch then started exploring some. We found a nifty little trail behind the zoo. It was beautiful, and on the other side, we had this great view of downtown.

It was a beautiful day…really hot though. The ride around downtown and then back home was just over 20 miles. That was my first 20-mile ride ever! All in all, we did about 37 miles. Sunday evening Tom made the dinner we bought at the Farmer’s Market, and we watched part of a movie. We didn’t make it to the end though; we were too sleepy.

Monday we walked through Carmelfest then went out for a drive. It was another really nice day. We had lunch and just goofed off together. We watched the Carmel fireworks Monday night from our front steps and talked to Tom’s family on the phone. It was a really great, relaxing weekend. :)

How was your holiday?

Carmel Half Marathon Recap

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Hi, friends!

It’s taken me forever to get this posted, but here we go finally…

I can’t believe how much I enjoyed the Carmel Half Marathon! The race started at 7:00 a.m. so Tom and I got up really early and walked over to the start. This was my first super-close-to-home race. I’ve run a couple races in downtown Indy, and Tom did one that was about five miles from home. The Carmel half marathon start/finish line is within a half mile of our front door! That was awesome! We walked over (Tom walked his bike) and joined all the folks warming up and preparing to cheer.

The marathon and half marathon both started at 7:00, and we all ran together for the first 2.5 miles or so. That was really great actually. It was a good sized race, but it wasn’t too crowded for us all to be together for that stretch. Runkeeper was right on with the first mile marker, and I was super happy about that. I keep it set to tell me as I finish each half mile because I find that really motivating. When Runkeeper said two miles though, the second mile marker was nowhere in sight. For the rest of the race, she was off by almost half a mile. The distance she was off stayed the same through the whole thing though. I don’t quite get what happened there. Maybe the course was mismeasured for that mile, but that seems unlikely. Maybe I just had a GPS glitch. Who knows?

They advertised this course as fast and flat, but I live in Carmel so I knew better. It’s hilly. They aren’t big hills, but there are lots of them. We meandered around in some great residential neighborhoods. I was surprised at how many people were out cheering us on. If you haven’t raced much, you might not think it matters, but for me, it makes racing so much more fun.

I don’t remember where I saw Tom the first time. I think it was after we split with the marathon group though. He’s the world’s best fan club. I couldn’t be more thankful for him! (Also he took pictures for you guys!!) The course was great, and there were several spots where he could ride along side me. That was pretty awesome. He’s so good at knowing exactly what I need to hear when. I was so worried about running that distance “alone.” Yes, I know there were a few thousand people out there too, but all the long races I’ve done before were with Tom running too. I was very nervous about how I’d do without him. I just can’t believe how much I enjoyed it.

Wait, that doesn’t sound right. I love running with Tom. I would have completely loved running this race with him, but that just wasn’t a possibility. We had his daughter’s graduation party that afternoon, and his 10-year-old son was with us that weekend.

So…since I couldn’t run with him, I tried to embrace that I was running alone. He was so wonderful cheering me on, and that helped immensely. My typical run involves listening to podcasts though so that’s what I did while he wasn’t riding next to me. I planned to switch to music if I was feeling like I needed a pick-me-up, but I never needed it. I felt pretty relaxed the whole way. My foot hurt off and on. (My feet are such a mess.) Even that wasn’t bad enough that I ever felt like I couldn’t keep going. I only walked through the water stops and when I was trying to open a gu. For the last couple miles, Tom’s son had gotten up and came out on his bike to join Tom in cheering me on. That was super cool. They’re the greatest cheering section!

IMG 1198

I love this picture he took of me through the fountain on Main St! Okay, partly I love it because it was about mile 12.5 or so, and it’s from far enough away that you can’t tell I’m pooped…LOL

I finished in 2:26!! I know part of it was just that I didn’t make a bathroom stop this time, but I was shocked that I finished 11 minutes faster than we did the mini. I felt AWESOME when I finished!

IMG 1139

How could I not feel awesome with this fan club??

IMG 1197

Not to mention someone I love who is so goofy he managed to get just the right angle post-race to make it look like the statue was palming my head…lol

I’m so proud of this race. I can’t wait to do the next one. I’m completely addicted to the half marathon distance. It’s far enough to be challenging, but it’s not so far that I don’t enjoy it. A lot of people have been asking when I’ll do my first marathon, but right now, I still don’t think I will. I know myself well enough to never say I’d never do one though. I know there could be a time when I want more of a challenge than the half marathon provides. I know I’m that crazy. :-)

For now though, I’m totally happy doing half marathons. The next one is the Indy Women’s Half Marathon on September 3, and I just can’t wait!

Two Big Things

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Hi, friends!

I’ve been REALLY slacking on getting you the big news in my life lately so forgive my tardiness please.

First…

I’M A GRANDMA!!!

IMG 0888

Little Claire Diane joined us at 3:36 a.m. Saturday, April 30. She weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces and was 18 inches long. She spent almost a week in the NICU getting a little stronger before she got to come home, but she and her mommy are doing wonderfully now.

I can honestly say that the greatest gift I have ever gotten was to be in the room when my daughter became a mother. I thought I knew what to expect from when my kids were born, but it’s an entirely different experience when you have the honor to hold the hand of someone you love. I am so proud of her and even more amazed by her.

We celebrated Mother’s Day yesterday with Claire’s first outing. We went to lunch then did a little shopping. Since she was 4 weeks early, a lot of her clothes are too big so we got her some more premie clothes. (You knew her first shopping trip had to be for clothes, right?) We also did a little rocking chair shopping. :-)

IMG 0926

She is so tiny and adorable.

IMG 0930

We had quite the conversation.

Seriously, I could post pictures of her ALL DAY! :-)

But that wouldn’t get me to the next big thing…

Tom and I ran a half marathon!!!

It was so amazing. I still can’t stop smiling. The 500 Festival Mini Marathon in Indianapolis is just an incredible event. About 4,000 people ran the 5K and 35,000 people ran the half marathon. It’s hard to describe what 35,000 people running looks and feels like. I’m not sure I’ll ever do it justice with words.

We started with two goals: finish and hopefully do it in under 3 hours.

We not only finished; we did it in 2:37. I can’t believe how fast it went by. I can’t believe we ran the whole thing except for the water stops and one potty break. I can’t believe the temperature was almost perfect. I can’t believe the rain that started around mile 7 didn’t dampen our spirits.

I think that we were actually running on the Indy 500 track when the rain started helped a lot. I know I didn’t stop smiling once during that whole 2.5 miles. The feeling of running on the track was just incredible. And it happens at the perfect time in the race. You’ve gone far enough to be a little tired but not so far that everything hurts. It’s about mile 5.75-8.25, I think.

I’ll have more details and pictures soon. I didn’t take any pictures, and no one came out to watch us so we’ll have to rely on the official pictures. Let’s hope they caught our good side…if there is one while running. I always seem to have weird expressions when I get race pictures back. Fingers crossed this time.

I can’t wait to do it again. :-)
